Paul Gauguin (The years 1887-1903)
The Paintings of Paul Gauguin Bretagne, Martinique, Tahiti and the Marquesas
Edited by Michael Schemmann.
Paul Gauguin was a leading French post-impressionist artist and an important figure in the symbolist movement. While he was poor and struggling during his career as an artist
(he was a Paris stock broker before), today his famous paintings are fetching tens of millions of dollars at auctions in New York and London.
This book includes 310 paintings on 224 color plates (many from private collections not normally available to public view), a detailed biography, a eulogy by Charles Morice (1903),
excerpts from Gauguin's fascinating book "Noa Noa," and is a rather large collection in one compendium covering the prolific artist's most dramatic and expressive 'impressionist'
period from 1887 to his death in 1903. The places of creation were Martinique in the Caribbean; an artist-village in Brittany (Pont-Aven); and Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia.

Vincent van Gogh (The years 1881-1890)
The Paintings of Vincent van Gogh Holland, Paris, Arles and Auvers
Edited by Michael Schemmann.
This book contains over 500 paintings on 230 color plates, many of which are in private collections and not easily accessible. The book includes a detailed biography
and a eulogy by contemporary artists: Emile Barnard and Paul Gauguin. Vincent van Gogh lived 120 years ago, and yet his artwork is still altering the way we view beauty, persona, individuality, and style in art.
Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, completing many of his best-known works during his last two years. He died at the age of 37. In just over a decade, van Gogh produced more than 2,100 artworks,
consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolours, drawings, sketches and prints. His many paintings and drawings have been copied by thousands but duplicated by none. What people today consider the
archetypical artistic persona is largely the result of his influence.

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)
The Japanese Woodcusts of Hiroshige
Compiled and edited by Michael Schemmann.
This book contains 106 full colour pictures of the artist's famous woodcuts and a detailed biography. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese painter and printmaker
transmuting everyday landscapes into intimate, lyrical scenes that made him successful. Hiroshige dominated the popular art of Japan in the first half of the 19th century.
His work was not as bold or innovative as that of the older masters, but he captured in a poetic and gentle way that people could understand the ordinary person's experience
of the Japanese landscape as well as the varied moods of memorable places at different times. His total output was immense: some 5400 prints in all.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa (1864-1901)
The Paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec
Compiled and edited by Michael Schemmann.
This book contains a detailed biography and 350 paintings on 334 full colour plates. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was and remains a remarkable paradox,
writes Florence Coman, Curator of French Paintings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Scion of an ancient aristocratic family, he spent his
adult life among the common people of Paris and Montmartre, even taking rooms in a brothel, and he made the city's seamy night life, cafes, cabarets,
dance halls, and theaters the principal subject of his art. Montmartre became established by the 1890s as an enclave famous for its naughty nightly revelry; the community flourished with the
tourist trade attracted by advertisements in the popular press and by eye-catching posters. Lautrec's painting Marcelle Lender Dancing the Bolero in
Chilpéric chronicles the spirit, style, and spectacle of the 1890s, and underscores Lautrec's fascination with the ambiguous boundaries between
art and artifice, and between 'high' and 'low' art. This work, along with his related paintings, drawings, and lithographs, embodies the artist's ultimately
egalitarian vision of life and art.

Tenzin Dawa (2011)
Isan Quiet Splendor
Many writers treat the landscape of Isan with disdain, writes Peter Rogers. Lacking the densely forested
splendor of northern Thai mountains or the easy lure of the southern palm-fringed beaches, there is little to be said of repetitive vistas of rice paddies and
low hills. "Yet those better acquainted with the Northeast... its charm
reveals itself shyly to the connoisseur of Thailand's varied scenery and not to those impressed only by the visual clichés of the tourist posters...
The quite splendor of the Isan landscape, a landscape that can take on the serenity of the far horizons of a Sibelius symphony or a painting by Cezanne…
rice fields and buffalos, its hills and forests. These immemorial views, changing seasonally, are never far from the heart of the Isan rural scene,
encompassing a land that today is less modified by the hand of man than any other part of Thailand."

Tenzin Dawa (2011)
Thailand Buddhism.
Insight Knowledge
An introduction to 'Theravada Buddhism' practiced in Thailand; a teaching helping people through their lives who
are free to believe what they wish, even disagree with the 'Blessed One'. Buddhism is tolerant of 'divergent views', wherefore ancient animistic spirit worship and the belief
in, and fear of, ghosts, is ever present. 'Spirit houses' are even found on temple grounds. Buddhism is not a scientific revelation, but an elaborate system of classifications
of insight knowledge in the abstract neatly placed into an ordering system: 'Knowledge is truth and can be classified according to right knowledge, or to wrong knowledge and
applied in three forms: doctrine, revelation, or personal knowledge, that is, intelligence.'

Tenzin Dawa (2011)
Nai Luang Beloved King of Thailand.
A History of the Chakri Dynasty.
The author maintains that the independence and integrity of Thailand is assured by three unifying factors: (1) The Thais' carefree disposition, (2) the tolerant Buddhist religion, and (3) the Thai throne.
For seven centuries Thailand has successfully survived as an independent nation while her neighbours disintegrated or fell victim of imperial colonial powers, followed by dictators, cultural revolutions and
exterminations. Thailand's unique and sacred institutions survive and flourish; without either one of them, Thais cannot foresee what their country would be like.
The book covers the Geography, People, Customs, History of the Ruling Kings and their Governments. A fascinating documentary right up to the present (2011).

Sir Charles Eliot (1921)
Buddhism (Vol. III of Hinduism and Buddhism)
Sir Charles Eliot (1921) a renowned British knight diplomat, colonial administrator and botanist describes on about 400 pages the History
and Practices of Buddhism in Asia and Influences in the Western World. According to the author, the spread of Hindu and Buddhist thought was an intellectual conquest, not an exchange of ideas. The influence of
Indian religion on Christianity is part of the wider question of its influence on the west generally. From 200 B.C. until 300 A.D. oriental religion played a considerable part in the countries round the Mediterranean.
In the author's view, "When all allowance is made for similar causes and coincidences, it is hard to believe that a collection of such practices as clerical celibacy, confession, the veneration of relics,
the use of the rosary and bells can have originated independently in both religions." 398 pages ISBN 978-1466333000.

Sigmund Freud (1920)
Dream Psychology. Psycho-analysis for Beginners.
Sigmund Freud's (1920) discoveries of the unconscious received a scornful reception by the medical; he was first laughed at
and then avoided as a crank. Freud's theories are anything but theoretical, but a pragmatic view that "truth is what works. Five facts of first magnitude were made obvious to the
world by his interpretation of dreams: First, a constant connection between some part of every dream and some detail of the dreamer's life during the previous waking state.
Secondly, secret thoughts in every dream and the attempted or successful gratification of some wish, conscious or unconscious. Thirdly, dream visions are symbolical but transparent
to the trained observer. Fourthly, sexual desires play an enormous part in our unconscious, a part which puritanical hypocrisy has always tried to minimize, and finally a direct
connection between dreams and insanity.

Sigmund Freud (3e 1914)
Theory of Sex.
Freud has been able to establish on a firm footing the remarkable thesis that psychoneurotic illnesses never occur with a perfectly normal sexual life.
Other sorts of emotions contribute to the result, but some aberration of the sexual life is always present, as the cause of especially insistent emotions and repressions.
The instincts with which each child is born furnish desires or cravings which must be dealt with in some fashion. They may be so far as is necessary and desirable into energies
of other sorts - as happens readily with the play-instinct - or they may remain as the source of perversions and inversions, and of cravings of new sorts substituted for those
of the more primitive kinds under the pressure of a conventional civilization. The symptoms of the functional psychoneuroses represent, after a fashion, some of these distorted
attempts to find a substitute for the imperative cravings born of the sexual instincts, and their form often depends, in part at least, on the peculiarities of the sexual life in infancy and early childhood.

The Unwritten Literature of Hawaii
The Sacred Songs of the Hula
The Hawaiians, it is true, were many removes from being primitives; their dreams, however, harked back to a period that was close to the world's infancy.
Their remote ancestry was, perhaps, akin to ours--Aryan, at least Asiatic--but the orbit of their evolution seems to have led them away from the strenuous discipline that has whipped the Anglo-Saxon branch
into fighting shape with fortune.

Irving Fisher
The Nature of Capital and Income
SCHUMPETER REGARDED The Nature of Capital and Income as one of the three of Fisher's (1906) contributions generally recognized as "of first-class importance
and originality. A significant achievement of The Nature of Capital and Income is its clarity in insisting on the distinction between stocks and flows and on careful attention to the dimensionalities of the concepts
used in economic discourse. One of Fisher's complaints about Adam Smith and his followers was their confusion on these points. According to Fisher, writers before Smith made more sense." (From the review by James
Tobin, 1991.)

From the Earth to the Moon
Some time after the end of the American Civil War, a Gun Club in Baltimore designs and builds a large cannon
that can shoot a projectile so that it reaches the moon. The Club raises money in America and Europe, deciding the place for the launch is Stone's Hill in
"Tampa Town," Florida; predating Kennedy Space Center's placement by almost 100 years. Jules Verne gives the exact position as 27º 7' northern latitude
and 5º 7' western longtitude, of course relative to the meridian of Washington, DC. In the end, the projectile is successfully launched, but the destinies of
the three astronauts are left inconclusive. The sequel starting in the middle of the book, "Around the Moon", deals with what happens to the three men in their
travel from the Earth to the Moon. ISBN 978-1463772451

Sigmund Freud (1873)
Totem and Taboo. Resemblances Between the Psychic Lives of Savages and Neurotics.
Taboo still exists in our midst, is negatively conceived and directed to different contents, but according to its psychological nature, it is still nothing else than Kant's
"Categorical Imperative" which tends to act compulsively and rejects all conscious motivations.
Totemism on the other hand is a religio-social institution which is alien to our present feelings;
it has long been abandoned and replaced by new forms. In the religions, morals, and customs of the civilized races of today it has left
only slight traces, and even among those races where it is still retained, it has had to undergo great changes. The social and material
progress of the history of mankind could obviously change taboo much less than totemism.

Hermann Hesse (1922)
Siddhartha An Indian Tale
Siddhartha is one of the most popular Western novels set in India around the time of Gautama Buddha.
The novel is structured on three of the traditional stages of life for Hindu males - student (brahmacarin), householder (grihastha) and recluse/renunciate (vanaprastha) - as well
as the Buddha's four noble truths (Part One) and eightfold path (Part Two) which form twelve chapters, the number in the novel. A major preoccupation of Hesse in writing Siddhartha
was to cure his 'sickness with life' (Lebenskrankheit) by immersing himself in Indian philosophy such as that expanded in the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita.
The reason the second half of the book took so long to write was that Hesse had not experienced that transcendental state of unity to which Siddhartha aspires. In an attempt to do so,
Hesse lived as a virtual semi-recluse and became totally immersed in the sacred teachings of both Hindu and Buddhist scriptures.

On 22 July 2011, Breivik allegedly bombed government buildings in Oslo, which resulted in eight deaths. Within hours after the explosion he arrived at Utøya island, the site of a Labour Party youth camp, posing as a
police officer and then opened fire on the unarmed adolescents present, reportedly killing 69. The youngest victim had just turned 14 years old. Breivik confessed and stated the purpose of the attack was to save
Norway and Western Europe from a Muslim takeover. In his '2083 Manifesto' of 1518 pages Breivik wants to see European policies on multiculturalism and immigration more similar to those of Japan and South Korea,
which he said are 'not far from cultural conservatism and nationalism at its best'. He expressed his admiration for the 'monoculturalism' of Japan and for the two nations' refusal to accept refugees.
Media citations: "I made the case, unpleasant though Breivik's views are, censoring his manifesto would only give him a martyrish status. Also, the reasons given for suppressing such writings would
quickly be used to attack and censor other books (like the Bible)." (Robert Sharp 5 Aug. 2011)
The New York Times writes on 30 July 2011: "While Mr. Breivik's violent acts are exceptional,
his anti-Islamic views are not... Countering extreme macro-nationalists like Al Qaeda and Anders Breivik is difficult because the causes they espouse often enjoy a certain popular support, even if their
prescription -- mass murder -- is almost universally rejected. Just as Al Qaeda exploited widespread Muslim opposition to American policies in the Middle East, so does Mr. Breivik tap into a relatively large
reservoir of anti-Muslim sentiment in Europe." The Telegraph
writes on 31 July 2011: "[Breivik] had a drastic solution, too, for curing what he saw as the ills of multicultural Norway. He would slaughter government workers and the children of the Norwegian socialist
elite as the opening salvo in a new crusade against what he perceived as the creeping Islamification of western Europe."
Jeffrey Dvorkin, head of journalism, University of Toronto, says: "I don't think there is any darkness that doesn't benefit from a little light." "Openness didn't hurt us in the coverage of [Holocaust denier]
Ernst Zundel, where we heard exactly the same reasoning - 'Don't give him a platform!'" added Toronto Star publisher John Cruickshank. "We gave him a platform and saw what he was. And it didn't advance his cause;
in fact, it brought us a healthier society." CBCnews 27 July 2011.
"It's always important to try to open up the discussion and get his arguments out in the open so they can be thoroughly debated in society" while not working "as a microphone" for him, said Lars Kristiansen,
the head of current affairs and documentary at NRK, Norway's public broadcaster. "There is a saying in Norwegian: 'Our trolls burst in the sun.'" p;
