Expat retirees in Thailand see their good life slide away. The high foreign exchange rate for the Thai baht. Immigration rules including mandatory health care. — "[F]or those living here on fixed savings or pensions, the baht's strength has decimated their income. British expats have lost about 30% of their purchasing power following the pound's plummet in the wake of Brexit.
"The financial squeeze comes amid changes to visa rules for retirees. As of February last year, foreigners must have a security deposit of 800,000 baht ($25,364) in a Thai bank account for two months prior to application or a monthly income of 65,000 baht; or a combination of the two totaling 800,000 baht.
"Applicants must now also have health insurance [with exceptions]. For someone aged 75, for example, that is a "big problem" as the premium could be as much as 100,000 baht per month, said Sebastian Brousseau, a lawyer.
"Research by Kasikornthai Bank estimated that in 2016, there were 68,300 foreigners over 50 years old holding long-stay visas, a 9% increase over the preceding two years. The market's niche but lucrative potential is prompting huge investment from health care operators."

"Thailand's birth rate last year dropped below 600,000 for the first time and took the country's TFR fertility rate down to 1.51, which is "extremely low", said Dr Kamthorn Pruksananonda, chairman of a sub-committee on reproductive medicine at the Royal Thai College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
The World Health Organization and World Bank have said that if a country's TFR goes under 2.1, its proportion of elderly will surge and problems associated with migrant workers will rise." — Bangkok Post 12 Febuary 2021.

"The Thonburi Healthcare Group (THG) launched Jin Well-being County in 2018, a 3.7-billion baht retirement city complete with a hospital and apartments aimed at wealthy Thais and Asians. The group plans to build a 43-hectare facility in Krabi targeting largely Westerners in the coming years, said Jin Well-being manager Ken Chen.
"It'll be more like a five-star hotel," said Chen. At 99,000 baht per sq. meter, Jin Well-being's apartments are not cheap, but for foreigners they could help bypass some of the stringent retirement visa rules, said Chen."

Pilgrims lick shrines to defeat coronavirus saying "the shrines in Qom are places for healing" — Middle East Monitor.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards' airline Mahan Air ran hundreds of flights around the world after 'lockdown'. "Coronavirus by air: The spread of Covid-19 in the Middle East.

"An investigation by BBC News Arabic has analysed flight tracking data and open source footage which shows how Iran's largest airline" ... Mahan Air ran hundreds of flights to and from Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Syria between late January and the end of March. All these countries gave Mahan Air permission to land while ... their own bans on routine flights from Iran were in place.
"Sources within the airline told the BBC that dozens of Mahan Air’s cabin crew were showing symptoms of Covid-19 and that when staff tried to raise concerns about the airline’s management of the crisis and provision of safety equipment, they were silenced." — The US has banned Mahan Air for its links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

At Bangkok's King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital
ICU nurse Suparvadee is scared of getting infected and "the virus leaking from the hospital," said Suparvadee, who has worked in the intensive care unit for 14 years.
But despite her worry she encourages patients to have hope. "I keep telling patients that they are not fighting alone," she said.
Suparvadee's job involves knowing every detail of each patient's condition. The novel coronavirus outbreak had also forced staff to learn a new workflow because none of them has experience with this kind of virus, she said. Since March 9, her hospital has treated nearly 200 coronavirus patients. Staff pride themselves on having not lost a single one.

Thailand has been more fortunate than Western European countries. With a population of 70 million people, as of 03 May 2020,

Thailand has reported 2,969 coronavirus infections with 54 related deaths, mostly in the 15 million densely populated Bangkok metropolitan area. Wearing face masks has been the rule from the beginning early on. Also, the tropical sun, 30+ Celsius daytime heat, and high humidity of the Thai summer months, which coincide with spring in the Northern hemisphere, seem to be a factor.

Intelligence Bombshell: China lied about lab accident and outbreak at its Wuhan Institute of Virology
A 15-page report by a Five Eyes security alliance between the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand claims to have evidence that the Xi Jinping regime hushed-up an accident involving tests on bats gone wrong, releasing the coronoavirus Covid-19, making whistle-blowers disappear, branding Beijings secrecy and 'assault on international transparency' by silencing its most vocal critics and scrubbing any online skepticism about its handling of the health emergency from the internet.
The report claims to "have found evidence the virus spawned at the Wuhan Institute of Virology close to the wet market China claims it came from, and unearths 'risky' research on bat-related diseases stretching back years."
Huang Yan Ling, a researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and thought to be patient zero for the global pandemic, mysteriously disappeared and her biography was deleted from the lab's website. "The institute has denied she was so-called 'patient zero' and said she is alive but has not been seen since. Other whistleblowers including businessman Fang Bin, lawyer Chen Qiushi and former state TV reporter Li Zehua are

reportedly being held in extrajudicial detention centers for speaking out about China's response to the pandemic." — By Rachel Sharp, Jack Elsom and James Tapsfield for Mail online and Mail online by Glen Owen, both dated 02 May 2020.

How the Pandemic Will End. Excerpts from the article by The Atlantic 25 April 2020.
"Much about the coming years, including the frequency, duration, and timing of social upheavals, depends on two properties of the virus, both of which are currently unknown. First: seasonality. Coronaviruses tend to be winter infections that wane or disappear in the summer."
"It depends, for a start, on making a vaccine. If this were a flu pandemic, that would be easier. The world is experienced at making flu vaccines and does so every year. But there are no existing vaccines for coronaviruses — until now, these viruses seemed to cause diseases that were mild or rare — so researchers must start from scratch. The first steps have been impressively quick."
"Whether through accumulating herd immunity or the long-awaited arrival of a vaccine, the virus will find spreading explosively more and more difficult. It's unlikely to disappear entirely. The vaccine may need to be updated as the virus changes, and people may need to get revaccinated on a regular basis, as they currently do for the flu. Models suggest that the virus might simmer around the world, triggering epidemics every few years or so."

"Years of isolationist rhetoric had consequences too. Citizens who saw China as a distant, different place, where bats are edible and authoritarianism is acceptable, failed to consider that they would be next or that they wouldn't be ready. (China's response to this crisis had its own problems, but that's for another time.) 'People believed the rhetoric that containment would work,' says Wendy Parmet, who studies law and public health at Northeastern University. 'We keep them out, and we'll be okay. When you have a body politic that buys into these ideas of isolationism and ethnonationalism, you're especially vulnerable when a pandemic hits.'"

Corona Virus 'dies faster in direct sunlight'.
William Bryan, the under secretary for science and technology at the US Department of Homeland Security, says the coronavirus may be killed faster under increased temperature, humidity and sunlight.
"We identified that heat and humidity is a weakness" of the virus' ability to spread, Bryan says, showing data suggesting that the virus could survive for 90 seconds under direct sunlight, and for 90 minutes without any solar contact.
The findings are an "emerging" result of their work, Bryan says.   —   BBC News 23 April 2020.

Bangkok and Saigon under water by 2020? Revised method for calculating land elevation levels paints grim picture for areas that are home to 150 million. — "Rising seas could affect three times more people by 2050 than previously thought, according to new research, threatening to all but erase some of the world's great coastal cities including Bangkok.
"The authors of a paper published this week developed a more accurate way of calculating land elevation based on satellite readings, a standard way of estimating the effects of sea level rise over large areas, and found that the previous numbers were far too optimistic.
"The new research shows that some 150 million people are now living on land that will be below the high-tide line by midcentury." — Bangkok Post 02 November 2019.

Severe Covid-19 patients at University of Chicago Medicine are responding to Gilead's investigational antiviral medicine remdesivir. — "[W]hen we start [the] drug, we see fever curves falling [...] [W]we do see when patients do come in with high fevers, they do [reduce] quite quickly. We have seen people come off ventilators a day after starting therapy. So, in that realm, overall our patients have done very well."

Individual Home Care or "Care Facilities for Elderly Assisted Living in Thailand" Article by Ryan Zander 2017-01-05 at iglu.com

Changing perspectives on elderly care in Thailand — [T]here is no registration or state licensing of private nursing homes in Thailand. Therefore, the exact number of nursing homes that provide long-term care is unknown. However, it is known that the number of nursing homes is increasing in Bangkok and other urban areas, and that the number of families that employ paid caregivers is also rising. The number of day elderly training center is also increasing rapidly to about 500 establishments in the country as a whole, however there are no regulations regarding educational and training standards, and the number of students of these facilities are limited. Severe drought predicted for Thailand and neighbouring countries — The Thaiger

Poor Isan — Isan is the poorest area of Thailand. This is due to bad climatic conditions (often hot and not enough rain). The south part of "ISAN" area (Buriram, Surin, Si saket, Ubon Ratchatani) and also the area around Khon Kaen are really poor areas. Those areas are really dry with less rain than in other Isan area. — Every dry season sons and daughter-in-laws leave villages to work in Bangkok and leave their children with grandparents to feed.

Koi Plaa: The Thai dish that can give you liver fluke cancer.

Where there are rivers or lakes in Isan (NE Thailand), the locals use the smaller fish, chop them up finely, mix them by hand with local herbs, lime juice, live red ants, and serve it up raw. Koi Plaa is very popular but also dangerous; found to be behind a high incidence of liver cancer in the area.

Liver fluke eggs are excreted into the water system by infected people. At the university hospital of Khon Kaen University they receive around 2,000 patients a year with a specific form of liver cancer called cholangiocarcinoma. Only around 200 of those can be treated, usually by surgery, cutting out the tumour from the liver. The others are given palliative care, easing their discomfort, usually by draining bile ducts, until they die. The only effective remedy is prevention. Doctors are trying to educate people about the risk. — BBC News 13 June 2015 online - offline — See also River fluke cancer warning by UdonMap.

Graviola:see the new book — What is a Graviola Tree? "Graviola (Annona muricata) is a rainforest tree, classified under the pineapple family Annonaceae. Also known as soursop or raintree or Brazilian paw paw, it is found in the belt extending from Central America to South America, including parts of Brazil." "The leaves, fruit, seeds, and stem are used to make medicine. Despite safety concerns, graviola is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and parasites including leishmaniasis, a disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bite of sand fleas; herpes; coughs; and cancer. It is also used to cause vomiting and to empty the bowels. Some people use graviola to help them relax. Graviola is applied to the skin for arthritis. In foods, graviola is used in cooking and beverages. How does it work? Graviola contains many chemicals that may be active against cancer, as well as disease-causing agents such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites." Thunder god vine Wikipedia

"Treatment of Obesity with Celastrol extracted from the Tripterygium Wilfordi thunder god vine plant. — Despite all modern advances in medicine, an effective drug treatment of obesity has not been found yet. Discovery of leptin two decades ago created hopes for treatment of obesity. However, development of leptin resistance has been a big obstacle, mitigating a leptin-centric treatment of obesity. Here, by using in silico drug-screening methods, we discovered that Celastrol, a pentacyclic triterpene extracted from the roots of Tripterygium Wilfordi (thunder god vine) plant, is a powerful anti-obesity agent."

"Celastrol suppresses food intake, blocks reduction of energy expenditure, and leads to up to 45% weight loss in hyperleptinemic diet-induced obese (DIO) mice by increasing leptin sensitivity, but it is ineffective in leptin-deficient (ob/ob) and leptin receptor-deficient (db/db) mouse models. These results indicate that Celastrol is a leptin sensitizer and a promising agent for the pharmacological treatment of obesity." — Ref.: Liu, Junli et al. (Harvard Medical School, Boston) Article | Schlankmacher aus chinerischen Gärten Artikel auf Deutsch | Where to buy celastrol Article | Side effects.

U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services warning: "Thunder god vine can cause severe side effects and can be poisonous if it is not carefully extracted from the skinned root. Other parts of the plant—including the leaves, flowers, and skin of the root—are highly poisonous and can cause death." Website

Don’t buy this herbal treatment for rheumatoid: "In addition to being perfectly natural, thunder god vine is also perfectly poisonous. It’s been used as rat poison and has even been a component of some insecticides. Just about every part of the plant is poisonous, except for the skinned root – and I still wonder how they managed to figure that out." Best Health Nutritionals.

The Facts on Leptin: "Leptin is not our obesity hormone. Leptin is our starvation hormone," says Robert H. Lustig, MD, professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco and a member of the Endocrine Society's Obesity Task Force. Leptin is a protein that's made in the fat cells, circulates in the bloodstream, and goes to the brain. "Leptin is the way your fat cells tell your brain that your energy thermostat is set right," Lustig says. The problem is that overweight people have large amounts of leptin, but their brains aren't getting the important signal to stop eating. — Article at WebMD.

BBC News - Deja vu: The expats ruined by property scams in Thailand. — The sparkling seas and warm beaches of Phuket are a magnet for sun-seeking holiday-makers and, increasingly, for foreigners seeking a comfortable and cost-efficient retirement. More than 100,000 foreigners have settled on the island - though some now bitterly regret it. — British expat Ian Rance and Irishman Colin Vard are now living almost penniless with their children on the outskirts of Bangkok as they struggle against overwhelming odds to recover properties they bought on Phuket.

Both men lost all their investments through frauds that neither of them imagined were possible. — "I'd made my money in England and had enough to retire I thought. I was looking for a place that was warm, a place that had some rule of law, where I could live in safety and peace," says Rance, a chartered surveyor and professional arbitrator from Hertfordshire, who arrived in Phuket in 2000. — Read the story on the BBC "The Phuket property nightmare." | offline - 25 September 2015.

What attracts young Thai women to date and marry older foreign men? — "Not all Thai women who married foreigners are prostitutes. Even if they are, they were not subjected to social gossip as severely as in the past. Thai women do not feel ashamed to marry foreigners like the ones in the late 1960s and 1970s. Marrying foreigners seems to be positive enough for them. Some have continued sending home money. The total amount is estimated at 40,000 million baht [US$ 1.2 billion] per year.

"Nearly 70% of Isan women who married foreingers completed only primary school, their pre-marriage income amounted to between 2,900 to 4,600 baht [US$ 90 to US$ 145] per month, whereas their post-marriage income [from a foreigner] amounted to as much as 45,000 baht [US$1,400] per month, even though most of them were just housewives." — Source: "Dissertation" by Vilas Duangkumnerd (2009), NIDA. — See also Lady of Pattaya by Michael Schemmann (2005) — Photo © 2009 by ThaiSunset.

How to survive sting by Box Jellyfish — YouTube video Australia.
9-year old boy died from box jeffyfish sting on Koh PhanganA nine-year-old Israeli boy died after being stung by a box jellyfish while playing in the water at a beach on Koh Phangan Island on Saturday 29 August 2021.
The boy and his family were playing in the water at Hat Rin beach, in front of Seaview Sunrise lodging house at Moo 6 village in tambon Ban Tai, about 5.30pm. The father heard his son cry for help and run up onto the beach. The boy had red marks on his right arm and legs and became dizzy.
The father poured vinegar onto the stings and called Koh Phangan International Hospital. The boy died on the way to the hospital.
Signs written in three languages had been put up at Hat Rin beach by the village committee, warning tourists to go into the water only at designated areas, which were surrounded by nets to protect them from box jellyfish. Bottles of vinegar were also provided at these spots to treat jellyfish stings. It seemed the boy had been playing in the water outside the netted area. — Reported by Bangkok Post 30 August 2021.
